2010 Official White House Ornament Fundraiser $25.00

All proceeds benefit First Book of Montgomery County, MD

CHRISTMAS AND THE WINTER SOCIAL SCENE - WILLIAM McKINLEY 1843–1901

Christmas celebrations at the White House during the McKinley years were quiet gatherings that usually centered around a turkey dinner with the president’s brother, Abner, and his wife Anna, and on occasion with favorite nieces, Grace McKinley and Sarah Duncan. There was little merry-making because of the absence of young children and Mrs. McKinley’s poor health. The McKinleys, admired and popular with the American people, received a stream of parcels, gift baskets, and flowers every Christmas. Once the gifts were unloaded from the wagons rolling up to the North Door of the White House, the president’s secretary, George Courtelyou, had them unwrapped. Useful gifts were distributed to the staff. Gifts of liquor or of great intrinsic value were returned immediately and perishables were dumped. The White House staff always received personal gifts from the first lady and plump turkeys were distributed to the married men. On Christmas day the president’s schedule usually allowed him more time with his wife and they would enjoy a carriage drive through the city parks where they could be alone together out in the crisp winter air.

The Montgomery Village Kiwanis Club announced today that the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life has received $3,000 due to holiday charity efforts that collected revenues that exceeded expectations. Fundraising drives included a “gift-wrap” at LakeForest Mall in which shoppers pay charitable organizations such as Kiwanis to wrap newly-purchased items at the Gaithersburg shopping mall and Christmas ornament sales to local businesses.

“I am proud of the businesses and individual shoppers that stepped up during these tough economic times and provided much-needed funding to help others,” said Montgomery Village Kiwanis Club President Dave Benway. “Every penny that can be raised for medical research takes us one step closer to making cancer a thing of the past.”

Relay for Life events build awareness for cancer, provides research funding, and helps achieve the American Cancer Society’s goal of elimating cancer. Events are held around the country and Montgomery Village Kiwanis Club members volunteer as staff and by funneling charitable donations.

2009 Official White House Ornament Fundraiser $24.00

The 2009 Ornament is the second ornament honoring the administration of President Grover Cleveland. Grover Cleveland is the only president to have two different ornaments created uniquely for his administration, one in 2007 and the other in 2009. Grover Cleveland served as the 22nd President from 1885-89 and the 24th President from 1893-97. Benjamin Harrison defeated him in the middle of his terms.

In 1894 the Clevelands were the first in the White House to celebrate Christmas with rare electric lights on their tree. One hundred multi-colored lights replaced candles for the first time. The ornament reveals a brightly lit tree shining through the window in the library on the second floor of the South Portico. The irridescent ornament is set in lavender housing.

This wonderful ornament comes with booklet describing the ornament and Cleveland's second term. It is gift-boxed in delicate blue featuring the South Portico of the White House.

FIRST BOOK

Our club is a proud to be a sponsor of the "FIRST BOOK" program, joining the National First Book organization in setting up and taking the lead in a new advisory board for Montgomery County.

First Books is our "Young Children Priority One" project, which provides books to children of disadvantaged families.

Our goal is to raise 300,000 books this year. The first phase of our projuect is underway. We will be working with Montgomery County Health Department to set up reading corners in each patient waiting room throughout the county and supplying it with books. Children will be able to select a book of their choice to take home with them.
